MARYAM'S STORY

Growing up as a shy Muslim girl in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Maryam Basir was taught to be modest and meek, and to cover her features, but she knew deep down that she wanted to express herself fully and radiate her inner beauty to the world.

 

Her "Aha" moment came when her father took her to Canada on a religious retreat. He had her wear a veil that completely covered her head and face, then told her she looked beautiful. That was her only recollection of her dad commenting on her beauty. This was a turning point for her, as it made her question why she had to cover her beauty.

 

There was a guilt associated with looking beautiful. She continued to cover herself - her body, hair, and even became self-conscious about her pink lips because she felt it was too much, so she covered those too.

 

As a young girl, Maryam realized that she could be both beautiful and modest, and that her external appearance was just one aspect of her overall radiance.

 

Instead of hiding from it, she decided to embrace it and use it to her advantage. She pivoted from being shy and meek to being unapologetic and confident.

 

Through the pain and struggle of her transformation, Maryam Basir found her true purpose and became an actor, model and entrepreneur.

 

She refused to apologize for her look and started celebrating it, despite the guilt associated with it in her culture.

 

Despite facing some disapproval from her family and community for her career as a model and actor, Maryam remains committed to her calling, and sees her appearance as a tool to inspire others celebrate their own beauty.

 

Now, as the founder of Maryam Beauty, Maryam's mission is to help people embrace their unique qualities and express their beauty in their own way.
